I remember this came up recently, maybe in a thread but I can't find it, so maybe it was on chat, but there was some question as to Rel Astra being the capital of Medegia. I just found this in "Events of the Eastern and Southern Flanaess" in DRG # 65 -- "There are no fewer than 6,000 “guards” of various
sorts at the capital city (which is Mentrey; the WORLD OF GREYHAWK™ Gazetteer erroneously labels Rel Astra, a semi-independent city, as the capital)..."
So, there you have it, official word that Mentrey was the Medegian capital. Well, so much for my theory that Rel Astra was the Flanaess's equivalent of Rome and the Vatican City.
Carl Sargent must have read that, since Ivid the Undying lists Medegia's capital as "None (previously Mentrey)." However, it also says that as of 585 CY, Rel Astra is the "nominal capital city of Medegia" and "Drax lays claim to much of old Medegia, and here his claim is but a formality."
Depending on the faith in question, a number of cities might qualify as the Vatican City of the Flanaess: Mithat, Mitrik, Ekbir, Erelhei-Cinlu, Enstad, Dorakaa, Garel Enkdal, even Nevond Nevnend.

Yep. Even in the real world we have Vatican City (Rome), Mecca, Jerusalem, Avignon (for a time), Lhasa, Varanasi, Salt Lake City, etc.
