    Alchemists, Herbalists, Apothecaries

Who are the noteworthy alchemists, herbalists and apothecaries of the the Flanaess and Oerth? Are there any dedicated organizations?

I recall in the City of Greyhawk boxed set that the city has a guild of Herbalists or such, and that there was an NPC class for something similar in Sages and Specialists. Nothing else comes to mind.

I do realize that in the early rule editions, there was no alchemist class per se, and so the practitioners might have been wizard/magic-user types to begin with. Either way I am drawing blanks and was wondering what I may have missed.

There's a group of three alchemists dwelling in Janaquil Valley at the mouth of the Ery River (From the Ashes Campaign Book, 26).

Stankaster Tower has a resident alchemist (From the Ashes Campaign Book, 30).

The Order of Kwalish includes alchemists (Living Greyhawk Player's Guide to Zeif, 40).

There's an alchemist shop in Garroten on Lendore Isle (L2 The Assassin's Knot, 8).

There's an Alchemists' Guild in Rel Mord led by a gnome (Living Greyhawk Journal #5, page 30).

The Wizards Guild in the City of Greyhawk has a guild alchemist (City of Greyhawk Feuds, Folks, and Factions 18-19). Heironymous Tigana is the Alchemist Major of the Guild of Wizardry (The Adventure Begins). His cousin Rimann is the librarian in the village of Farlen (Ivid the Undying).

Fate of Istus included a character called Narlond the White Alchemist, one of the incarnations of the entity Morgorath.

Murphy O'Grady runs the apothecary in the town of Rockburgh-on-the-Marsh (WG9 Gargoyle, 8). He has ambitions of becoming an alchemist.

Cranzer of Riftcrag is a skilled alchemist (Iuz the Evil).

Panshazek in the town of Greenreach has a group of expert herbalists and alchemists working within the dungeons (Iuz the Evil).

Nyeru Darkspring is the son of a wealthy Bissel alchemist (Vale of the Mage, 36).

Ch'phon the Alchemist works in Castle Greyhawk's Citadel Union (WG7 Castle Greyhawk, 6).

Winetha's alchemists have developed an oil that protects bow strings from wet air (Ivid the Undying).

Madame Zaccaruso is an amateur alchemist (The Adventure Begins).

Keoghtom and Nolzur are famous alchemists.

1e alchemist classes from Dragon Magazine include:

    Quote:

    Alchemist NPC class
    - "Better Living Through Alchemy" by Tom Armstrong in #130(34)
    - "New D&D Character Class: The Alchemist, A" by Jon Pickens in TD#2(28)
    - "NPCs For Hire: ...And One Who Seeks the Perfect Mix" by Roger & Georgia Moore in #45(11)
    - "Recipe For the Alchemist, A" by Len Lakofka in #49(56)

For plants, herbs, and such, see:

    Quote:

    Plants:
    - "Ecology of Carnivorous Plants, The" by Gregg Chamberlain in #137(26)
    - "Plants of Biurndon, The" by Eric W. Pass in #108(42)
    - "Legacy of Hortus, The" by Jack Crane in #87(31)
    - "Wounds and Weeds" by Kevin J. Anderson in #82(14)

And of course, poisons, about which quite a bit more was written BITD:

    Quote:

    Poisons:
    - "Effective Use of Poison" by Bill Coburn in TD#18(24)
    - "Poison: The Toxins Of Cerilon" by Larry DiTillio in #59(57)
    - "Poisons From AA to XX" by Charles Sagui in TD#32(4)
    - "Taking the Sting Out of Poison" by Chris Landsea in #81(6)

    Poison Gas
    - "Gas 'Em Up and Smoke 'Em Out" by Robert Plamondon in #45(6)
    Poison Lotus
    - "Deadliest Perfume, The" by John P. Brown in #121(26)

All data from The DragonDex @ http://www.aeolia.net/dragondex/

Of all of these, I recommend the plants/herbs/poisons articles by Crane, Pass, Anderson, and DiTillio. For the Alchemist NPC class, I'd go with Lakofka's.

The old Bard Games Alchemists supplement The Compleat Alchemist (1983, later reprinted by Wizards of the Coast c. 1992 or so) is also quite good.

    Allan.

and Holwin Kragmere of Sterich (Dungeon #118, I think) who runs basically an alchemical outlet mall (that's how the PCs in my campaign treat her). She's a gnome follower of Keoghtom.
