Probably just a residual effect of the test run for the Rain of Colorless Fire that just so happened to be used on Earth and killed off the dinosaurs.

I think the portal to the City of Brass that Greyhawk Adventures placed in the region might have something to do with it.
My theory is that using the Codex of the Infinite Planes, Tzunk opened a portal there when he was invading the City of Brass, and the terrain around it never stopped burning. |
