    Dispel Evil

    Hello All,

Been a long time since my last post, so I guess it's time to break the silence with another Lanthorn query. This regards the 5th level priest spell, Dispel Evil. The duration is 1 rnd/level, and the caster can attempt to send a creature from another plane back to its origins with a successful 'to hit' roll if the creature fails its save after the successful strike.

    Here is the question:

Can the priest continue to attempt to send the extra-planar creature back to its home plane more than once if the first attempt is not successful?

My thoughts are...Yes. The duration is limited, first of all. Secondly, the priest has to actually 'hit' the creature. Then, it must fail its save.

    What do you all think?

    thanks,

    Lanthorn

I'm going to agree with you for game balance reasons.

Usually, a spell requires either a To Hit roll from the caster or a saving throw by the target, not both. It is a 5th level spell that has two chances of failure. If the caster only got a single try, it would be fairly worthless.

Negatively, the cleric casting the spell has to cast it one round, then engage in melee with the target on the next. He must succeed in hitting the target without getting himself taken out of commission by the many powerful abilities of the target long enough to hit the creature enough times that it, hopefully, eventually fails its saving throw. Any extra-planar creature targeted by that spell is going to have pretty good saves. (No cleric is going to waste a 5th level spell on a Manes or Lemure when simply hitting it a time or two will kill it anyway.)

    SirXaris, precisely!

Furthermore, most likely the extra-planar creature also has Magic Resistance ON TOP of having a decent saving throw. So, yes, I fully agree with you.

That being said, if the creature makes its Magic Resistance roll, does that mean the spell for its FULL duration is ineffective, OR does that mean the creature is immune to that individual attack and must check for Magic Resistance (and subsequent saving throw) if the priest successfully strikes it again?

    thanks...anyone else?

    Neither.

I would rule that Magic Resistance is checked once for each spell. If the creature's MR resists the spell on its initial check, that spell fails for that creature no matter how many times it gets hit. If it fails its MR on the first hit, then it must succeed on a saving throw every time it gets hit after as long as the spell duration lasts. The MR is a one-time check.
