Somewhere deep in the Pomarj in a forgotten tomb an old god

stirs in fitfull slumber, waiting for someone to call him once more to defend the land from those who would seek to dominate it.

Long ago in a Dragon magazine I read an article on the Pomarj that described a Flan God dedicated to Balance who would come forth once again if a group rose to power that would be capable of destroying the balance in the central Flanaes. I don't remember the name of that god and I can't find the article. Can someone lend me a hand?

I've thought of incorporating this god along with my favorite new god in the pantheon Kelanen Prince of Swords-Champion of Balance and would appreciate any information people might have about them (I did read the excellent article on Kelanen online and eagerly await more).

Krovis

Yeah, I remember that article.

It was the March '91 issue "See the Pomarj - and Die" by Joseph Bloch. A lot of good information was in it. It was used as a reference in the Greyhawk product Slavers as well (even though the article itself was described as unofficial in the magazine). It was in Dragon issue 167.

The quasi deity was called Krovis. He was described as being close to Trithereon. He was neutral in alignment and his purpose was to prevent the domination of any "goodly portion of the Flanaess" by any one individual or state. The article hinted that Krovis might awaken due to the events of the Greyhawk Wars, but canon sources do not mention any such involvement by Krovis, so it would be safe to say that the portions of the Oerth weren't sufficiently dominated yet to warrent his awakening.

So, what's with all these sleepy gods mucking about in the Pomarj then. It is the home of the Earth Dragon god as well according to Slavers. Makes ya wonder if there are any more.

A german friend of mine recently told me that Drachensgrab means "Dragon's Grave" (or something to that effect, I can't exactly remember her exact words). Kinda gives a clue on what lies there, doesn't it Happy

According to Rob Kuntz's bibliography on this site at http://www.canonfire.com/cf/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=125 ...:

Quote:
Lair of the Pit Fiend, 1976. Unpublished. Dungeon adventure set in the Drachensgrab Mountains. Four complete maps, extensive notes, pregenerated PCs. N.B. This scenario directly relates to the Greyhawk Gazetteer's allusion that something will arise in anger if its resting place beneath the hills (mountains) is disturbed. This was a literary placement by EGG as he was naturally aware of the module's future setting.

...which gives you another option to consider in your campaigns!

Has there been any more mention of this Lair of the Pit Fiend adventure?

Jason---

The manuscripts for it were sold off by Rob via Paul Stormberg c. 2006-ish, and they're included in the El Raja Key Archive scans. I'll pull some info out to summarize it later in the week.

I compiled this list a few years ago. GH writers keep adding to that Folio reference, not realizing that the Slave Lords modules and many less known sources already developed it:
*The Pit of Geburah, Kuntz, 1976
*The Oerth Dragon, A1-4, 1981
*The Twisted Forest, Greyhawk Adventures, 1988
*Krovis, Joe Bloch, Dragon #167, 1991
*"sleeping" temples of Tharizdun (no doubt inspired by the events in Gygax's Artifact of evil), Carl Sargent, Dragon #191, 1993
*The Tarrasque, c.2000's fanon

The Tarrasque connects nicely to Kuntz's writing on Tharizdun in the Chaotic Henchman module, Dark Druids. An enterprising DM could tie Kuntz's Tarrasque, Sargent's references to Tharizdun, and perhaps even elements of The Pit of Geburah together.

Here's the info from the ERK Archive:

Quote:

Pit of Geburah

This is Rob's Original Greyhawk Campaign545 tournament module1399 "Pit of Geburah78"! Wow! This is an unfinished tournament module conceived by Rob Kuntz1175 shortly after the 19767 release of Gods, Demigods & Heroes386, a book he co-authored with James Ward. After the release of Dungeons & Dragons Supplement IV: Gods, Demigods & Heroes the folks at TSR1409 were looking for a tournament module to support their product. Then Rob had it! How about a multidimension spanning adventure that had a greater god538, Ptah, summoning1297 the heroes of legend from different times and realities to rescue an artifact of tremendous importance! Thus, the Pit of Geburah (A.K.A. "Lair of the Pit Fiend1081") was born!

Rob came up with the basic design, the main bad guy, and man is he bad, the boss of all Pit Fiends, Geburah, Eater of Worlds! Now he needed the pre-rolled tournament characters. These he took from his draft manuscript of Dungeons & Dragons Supplement IV: Gods, Demigods & Heroes and, later, from his draft manuscript work on Advanced Dungeons & Dragons37 Deities & Demigods. The team of heroes included: Achilles, Hermod, Lemminkainen, Conan, Fafhrd, Elric, and to lead them all - Math. Holy cow! How tough does this adventure have to be to include ALL of these guys!?

The module is set in the Original Greyhawk Campaign, in the Drachensgrab359 Hills, in the Pomarj1092, in a mountain rising above the hills. Stoor Mountain is the name of the peak and the location for the Pit of Geburah. Gary Gygax651 knew of Rob's module and made a point to include it in the 197910 Original Greyhawk Campaign Folio. Indeed, the text for the Drachensgrab Hills state: "Legends say these hills hide the resting place of one or more powerful creatures who may one day return to life." This was an intentional hook placed by Gygax for the Pit of Geburah!

The manuscript for this tournament module was started by Rob after the release of the Dungeons & Dragons Supplement IV: Gods, Demigods & Heroes in 1976. Projects superseded projects and the Pit of Geburah was put on the back burner. Then in 1977-80 Rob worked on it some more. Eventually, TSR's design department got a hold of it and began developing it for TSR's series of Original Greyhawk Campaign modules. Eric Shook442 began adding to and expanding the manuscript (you can see Eric's very distinct printing on several of the pages within). Included in his additions are several fantastic magic items including the wand of Kune917 and sword of Geburah. Unfortunately, due to shifting priorities the module went to the back burner yet again.

The module would have been lost to obscurity had it not been for Rob finding it again. The manuscript consists of four typed pages, three maps, seven pre-generated tournament character sheets, and twenty-five pages of handwritten manuscript. It was in Rob's original folder, labeled "Rob Kuntz "Pit of Geburah" AKA "Lair of the Pit Fiend", with a few extra card and reference notes.

The provenance of the pregenerated character sheets comes from the Dungeons & Dragons Supplement IV manuscript and the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Deities & Demigods as follows:

Dungeons & Dragons Supplement IV: Gods, Demigods & Heroes Manuscript: Four pre-generated character sheets, Conan, Elric, Hermod, and Lemminkainen, are Rob Kuntz's original hand written pages from the draft manuscript of Dungeons & Dragons Supplement IV: Gods, Demigods & Heroes! These are the original manuscript pages that Rob worked on during his time at TSR. They are Rob Kuntz's unedited, original descriptions for the two heroes and they have a few variations from the finalized Gods, Demigods & Heroes. These four pages are a treasure in their own right!

Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Deities & Demigods Manuscript: Two pre-generated character sheets, Achilles and Fafhrd, are typed pages from the original draft manuscript of the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Deities & Demigods book! These are the original manuscript pages that Rob worked on during his time at TSR (he worked on the Greek, Norse, and Newhon mythos). These are Rob Kuntz's unedited, original descriptions for the two heroes and they have a few variations from the finalized Deities & Demigods book. These two pages are a treasure in their own right! The manuscript details a number of encounter areas, many ideas, sketches, mock-ups, maps, new magic items, including the Sword of Belial, monsters, the statistics for Geburah, and all of the pre-generated heroes.

Amazing tournament adventure set in the Original World of Greyhawk!
