    Castle Project

After a recent Legends&Lore twitch show regarding castles I've had a desire to start developing castles for the Greyhawk setting. Looking at earthly pictures I think many can e used for the Flanaess.

The Krak des Chevaliers is a crusader castle in Syria. It is heavily fortified and reinforced during the gunpowder era. I can see it in many places. Shield Lands, Perrenland, Bissel, Tenh, the Pale, North Province....

Krak de Chevalier is no small keep! It is probably the most powerful non-concentric castle in the world. It is a wonder that would require an incredible concentration of man-power and/or magic and finances to build. Krak de Chavalier is on a plateau in the middle of a valley, making it even more impregnable.

Therefore, I suggest that such a castle could only be built by a very powerful nation and would only be built in a location that said nation wanted to control and didn't fear having it taken by the enemy.

I recommend places like the western borders of Bissel or Veluna to protect against Ketite incursions, northern Perrenland to protect against incursions by the Tiger or Wolf Nomads, southern Ratik to protect against raids from the Bone March, eastern Principality of Ulek, etc.

I always thought the Lalibela Churches in Ethiopia would make an interesting castle, even though it was never created to be one. They are carved right out of the rock. The real churches are of soft volcanic rock but no reason in a fantasy world that they couldn't be carved of something much harder. They could be protected by flights of gargoyles who push attackers into the openings or pick them up and drop them. It is interconnected underground, so the main entrance could be heavily trapped and defended. It would be extremely difficult to destroy using standard siege weapons both because it is below ground level and they are carved out of a single piece of rock. At the very least it sparks the imagination....
