I share your appreciation of the Suel as following Greek and Roman models to a large degree. With a dash of the Melnibonean, that about sums up how I see them in general.
I think a patron/client relationship would certainly be interesting in the specific context of the Suel houses, forgetting everybody else for a moment. That would make for even more interesting politics.
And what about "fostering?" That could be part of a patronage system or a distinct tradition of its own. I like the idea of fostering as a separate tradition, because it also has strictly feudal applications. But combined with a patronage system, you could get some truly Byzantine (or "Suel") politics!
