Corn seems to thrive in the American midwest, as far north as Nebraska and the Dakotas, these are neither especially far south nor overly arid. While corn didn't originate their in Earth's ecology, there's no reason the devlopment of corn on Oerth has to follow the same timeline.
The entire point was, corn could grow in the Pomarj plains/flatlands areas, but it a highly unlikely crop in Hepmonaland.
Since there are no canon references as to which crops do grow in the Pomarj, I'm going to stick with what's stated in the article.
