In my 1e games, we eventually got around to working up a system with d10 for initiative, with adjustments based on casting time, haste, etc., which determined when you acted in the round. We messed around with WSFs some but never quite got things defined to that level of granularity for regular play use.
In general, however, even a two-handed sword was faster than someone standing in place begging to be hit while chanting some words and making strane gestures in the air....
