Spell Books of the Flanaess: The Lost Book of Gems
Posted on Sat, August 21, 2004 by Farcluun
cwslyclgh writes "There are many wizards in the world of greyhawk, and not all of them belong to the circle of eight. For every Bigby or Tenser there are dozens of lesser mages, many of whom create thier own spells with just as much pride as an archamage. Here is a spellbook created by one such wizard, lost in the wilds, and perhaps waiting to be found by your player characters.

    The Book of Gems

    by C. Wesley Clough

Description: This spell book is 18 inches tall, and a foot wide, it is about an inch and a half thick. The book’s cover is made out of thin copper plates covered with displacer beast hide. The book gets its name from the opals embedded in the corners of the book covers, both front and back, there is a silver lock on the front of the book set with 3 small pearls. The keyhole is merely ornamental, and the lock is actually opened by pressing the pearls in a specific order.

History: As far as lost books go The Book of Gems has not been lost that long, leading one researcher to remark that it is not truly lost, merely misplaced. Created by the half-elven adventuress Shalla Silverheart, and sent as a gift to her former mentor and patron Alhamazed the Wise in the year 588 CY. The book never made it to its destination. Of the party of young adventurers that Shalla had contracted to deliver the book, only one survived. According to his story the group was half a days ride East of Mitrik, on the way from Greyhawk to Zief, when a hunting pair of wyverns attacked them. Although the group managed to fight off the beasts the party’s cleric, who was carrying the book, was snatched up by the retreating wyverns and carried off. The rest of the party tracked the wyverns back to their lair, and attempted to reclaim the body of their friend and the book. Unfortunately the lair contained a couple of more unwounded wyverns, along with those that they had already faced, and the party was slaughtered by the monsters. Chaz of Stoink, a human rogue, decided to return to Greyhawk and tell Shalla what had transpired. Shalla and her brother, the ranger Lystrim Silverheart, checked out the rogue’s story, but they discovered that by the time they found it, parties unknown had already looted the lair. All of the monsters were dead, and everything of value, including the book, had been taken. It is known that Shalla Silverheart makes her home in the city of Greyhawk, and would be willing to reward anyone who could return the book to her.

Contents: The Book of Gems contains the following sorcerer/wizard spells inside of it: daylight, glitterdust, halt undead, invisibility sphere, keen edge, lightning bolt, locate object, minor creation, read magic, scare, shield, sleep, stoneshape, stoneskin, tongues, true strike, wall of ice, and the unique spell Shalla’s Silvery Radiance.

    Shalla’s Silvery Radiance
    Evocation
    Level: Bard 2, Sor/Wiz 2
    Components: V,S
    Casting Time: 1 standard action
    Range: Personal
    Target: You
Duration: 10 minutes/level or until discharged
    Saving Throw: special (see below)
    Spell Resistance: no

When this spell is cast, the casters head begins to glow with a silvery-white radiance drawn from the positive material plane. This luminescence is equal to torchlight, and in all ways acts as such. By force of will, the caster can at any time during the duration of the spell cause the radiance to flare brightly so that any creature with in 30 feet of the caster, and looking in the casters general direction, must make a reflex save or be blinded for 1d6 rounds. The caster is immune to this blindness. Undead creatures are not blinded by the spell, instead if the caster cause the spell to flare all undead with in 30 feet must make a will save or be affected as if turned by a priest. Causing the spell to flare ends the spell no matter how long is left on the duration.

Good 'little known' spellbook, wes. I particularly like the tie in with Alhamazad...always appealing to me. ;)

Interesting idea for an adventure hook or special treasure. A few questions:

    1. How does one track a flying wyvern?
    2. Does the blindness flare affect creatures friendly to the caster if they are looking at her?
    3. Is the caster still immune to the blindness if she sees it reflected in some manner?
    4. "as if turned by a priest" Do you need to specify the level of the priest (I am ignorant of 3E mechanics).

    Nice work,

    Kirt

The most enjoyable thing about this article was the backstory of the spellbook. It would be a good quest for some glutton-for-punishment adventurers to handle ;)
