    I was mildly surprised and pleased too.

    The beauty of settings like Planescape and Spelljammer (which I personally can't stomach, but it does have a loyal following, so I'll give it its due) is that they can exist in tandem with more traditional settings. Thus, unlike the heated wars you get between fans of Greyhawk, the Forgotten Realms, Mystara, and all the rest, you find fans of those settings who are also fans of PS and SJ. These cross-compatible settings seemed like ideal product lines for TSR/WotC to pursue, and I've always wondered why they didn't gain more of a following. Perhaps it has to do with the way the SJ and PS were marketed to existing players, who probably had established loyalty to another setting. Maybe if products like Greyspace had been better written and marketed more to GH fans than to SJ fans, the idea of SJ or PS as extensions suitable for use with any campaign would have taken hold among players.
