I'll vort for Paynims, since this MUST include the most atrocious and as the poll says FEARSOME fighters in the world, ULL! Greyhawk Convention? they never heard of it.

I got to go with the Pale. Those monotheistic zealots preaching of Pholtus as the one true god. Scary how religion is somehow always involved when it comes to war.

The Hoblogger Engineers are the greatest fighters of the Flanaess!

It depends on the definition of "Fearsome".

Militarily it is the GK Companion Guard; even with a corrupt declining GK, the Ivid the Undying sourcebook still mentions they are the premier elite force of the Flanaess.

However, if "Fearsome" means terror inspiring might I suggest an other; namely the Legion of the Deranged out of Gibbering Gate, the Iuz insane asylum within the barrens.

In Iuz the Evil; it mentions how Iuz delights in suggesting "reassignment" to members of the out of favour Boneheart or his Elite force within Dorakaa which renders them speechless with terror. If it horrifies that collection of psychopaths and sociopaths; read the entry it is truly chilling.

All of the surrounding nations seem to agree as well; be it cold blooded spellcasters, black-hearted bandits,  the brutal stonehold or cunning rovers, gibbering gate gets a shudder and wide berth from all concerned.

Just a thought...

I'd also point out that the game system in use makes a lot of difference. Barbarians in 1e are VERY powerful one-on-one fighters...and monks in 3.0e are VERY powerful one-on-one fighters.

That said, from a purely "fluff" based standpoint...I'd say it would be the Hobgoblins; cruel and uncompromising leaders would force them to go well above and beyond the hardships and danger level that a 'normal' soldier would. As well, they are born and bred for a life of battle, struggle, pain and death. I'd imagine that a group of adolecent hobgoblins would be about as experienced at battle as most 30-something human captains.

The Companion Guard of the Overking, no question.  Aerdy has arguably the richest military tradition in the Flanaess, and centuries of heritage and legacy given to the elite guards of what for centuries was the most powerful person in the Flanaess.  A paranoid madman like Ivid V would only ensure that his Companion Guards were second to none in skill, training, morale and power.

Sorry, I don't know who Iuz's "Orog High" are, perhaps a reference to Tolkein's Urak Hai? As per the City of Skulls and Iuz the Evil, Iuz's elite force is the Legion of Black Death, a unit with orogs, men, and fiends, minimum level 5, officers of levels 7 to 9, and a baron cambion commander.

I have to give it to the Cold Barbarian, especially if we're talking about 1st Ed or 3rd Ed--especially if we're talking about frenzied berserkers.  Let's face it: nobody really wants to go  up against a bunch of warriors insane and frothing at the mouth who keep in fighting after they should by all rights have dropped dead.

The most fearsome fighting force in the Flanaess is US, the players who strive to keep it alive! We own all of the armies....together in one cohesive sweep, we should take over Wizards of the Coast and make them kneel to us! If it wasn't for Greyhawk, there would be no Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, or Ebberon.
