Postfest IV: Arcane Spells - Spider Strand
Posted on Mon, April 04, 2005 by Dongul
Cebrion writes "The spider strand spell was originally developed by an adventuring elven mage/ thief who was most often in the service of Veluna and Furyondy. The spell was crafted for use in "second story work", and for use in adventuring in the vaulted caverns of the Underdark. The spell is most useful in helping those who cannot climb very well to do so, or to speed up how quickly an adept climber can climb.

    Spider Strand
    Level: Sor/Wiz 4
    Components: S, M
    Casting Time: 1 standard action
    Range: Medium (50ft. + 10 ft. / level)
    Effect: One or more strands.
    Duration: 1 minute per level
    Saving Throw: None
    Spell Resistance: No

This spell enables the caster to create a dull, semi-transparent pencil thin spider web strand between two points no more than 50 ft. + 10 ft. per level of the caster apart. The strand is tough and resilient (Hardness: 10, Hit Points: 2 per level of the caster), and can support up to 100 lbs. + 50 lbs. per level of the caster. If the weight limit is exceeded then the spider strand will break and dissolve away into nothingness. Individuals may climb the sticky spider strand with a +10 bonus on their climb checks. If the spider strand is placed horizontally at up to a 45’ angle, individuals crossing it gain a +10 bonus to Balance checks. The caster may also choose a person’s hand or an object as one of the anchor points, enabling them or the object to swing or be swung from the spider strand. The caster can create one additional spider strand in each subsequent round as a free action for the duration of the spell. The caster may cancel the spell at any time.
Material Component: a bit of spider web.

Who on Oerth would cast Spider Strand as a 4th level spell when Spider Climb is a 1st level spell? At best, this would be an innovative way to cast Web, a 2nd level spell.

I would probably use Scott's suggestion and make this a 2nd level variant of the web spell, especially with the rather limited area of effect and duration.

I set the level of the spell at 4th because of one main point- the spell's use is NOT limited to the caster alone.  An entire gang of thieves for instance can make use of it, which to me makes it a very useful, and therefore powerful spell.  I vasilated over making it a 3rd and 4th level spell.  Either would suit, though I decided to er on the side of the higher level.

Good description of a spell but why or how was it created. To me history is the most important part of magical creation. Besides what level the spell should be I just think of how the fireball spell is 3rd level and the Chill touch spell is 5th level. However fireball causes more damage at higher levels than chill touch. So the spell level didn't phase me. However like I previously stated history on why something was created goes a long way with me.

Actually I was thinking Cone of Cold and saying chill touch duh.. But I think you got what I mean in both second and first edition this happened often don't know enough about the newest edition to comment but it seems to at least try and contain the power of spells.

For why and how the spell was created, you should have looked at the introduction of the spell just under then name"Cebrion" at the top of the page.  The intro is very simple, but then again, sometimes ther reasons for things are very simple.

The creator of the spell, a pc of my own, created the spell for exactly its stated uses.  The pc always wanted to invade some fortified tower or castle, but never got the chance to do so until reaching Erelei Cinlu.  Multiple lesser family compounds were wiped out by he and his group, before continuing on towards the Fane of Lolth.  At his height of ability he was a mage 11/thief 13 (2e rules), and a very dangerous individual to be on the wrong side of.  Very meticulous, patient, and a good planner, he set up many an ambush/attack scenario.
